Do You Need Car Insurance with a Learner’s License?

Can You Get Car Insurance With a Learner's Permit? | Bankrate

What does a learner’s license mean?

A learner’s permit is a brief licence that is only good for six months. It is given to individuals so they can practise operating motor vehicles. A person receiving training or learning to drive with the intention of showing up for a driving proficiency test is exempt from the provisions of section 3’s sub-section (1). Also, the vehicle should plainly display the letter “L” in red, fixed on a white background.

Why do you need car insurance if you don’t have a license

Someone who does not possess a driver’s licence is not permitted to operate a vehicle. Even though the owner only has a learner’s licence, the car still needs to be insured. The following are the reasons why it is essential (given that you are the owner):

  • If you are the main driver. In this scenario, a professional driver and the required third-party insurance must operate the vehicle.
  • While you currently have a valid learner’s permit and soon will also have one.
  • When you possess a rare or antique vehicle.
  • When you purchase a vehicle for a friend or family member who will be the main driver.
  • The primary driver will be the caretaker, driver, or a family member if you are physically incapable of operating the vehicle owing to age or physical limitations.

How to get car insurance without a license

According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, third-party car insurance must be purchased by every car owner. And according to the law, a driving licence is required in order to operate a vehicle on public roads. Nonetheless, you can still apply for car insurance for your vehicle even if you own a car but do not yet possess a driver’s licence.

A car insurance calculator is a tool you may use online to determine the amount of coverage required based on your needs.

The important thing to keep in mind is that not many insurance companies provide learners’ permit holders with this choice. But, in this situation, the insurer will monitor the driver’s history to determine the car insurance prices and scope of coverage. The primary driver’s licence of the person who will be operating your vehicle on your behalf must be shown in the event that you do not have a valid driver’s licence.

You will receive the new car insurance and be regarded as an excluded driver after the license’s specifics have been disclosed. Moreover, the driver’s insurance will not provide coverage for you. Also, you must notify your insurer if you obtain a licence during the insurance purchase process so that they can designate you as the principal driver using the most recent version of the paperwork.

Qualifications for getting a learner’s license

According to section 4 of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, a person who has reached the age of one year may, with the permission of a parent or guardian, receive a driving licence for a two-wheeler without gear and an engine no larger than 50cc.

The applicant must be 18 years of age or older on the day of application in order to be granted a driving licence for a vehicle.

Documents needed to get a learner’s license

For the learner’s licence, the following paperwork is needed:

  • Form 1, a declaration of application and physical fitness.
  • Recent passport-size photos in two copies.
  • Form 2, the application for a learner’s permit.
  • Copy of a residence proof with my signature on it
  • Self-attested copy of an age verification
  • A self-attested copy of the documentation for your schooling (min requirement is 8th standard passed for transportation vehicle)
  • Required payment
