France’s Macron Calls for Regulation of Social Media to Stem ‘Threat to Democracy’

PARIS—French President Emmanuel Macron known as for global regulation to control the spread of ideological extremism in Western democracies, chiding tech companies and political correctness for permitting it to prosper.

Talking to a group of reporters within the Élysée Palace, Mr. Macron claimed the storming of the U.S. Capitol was a sign of the West’s failure to rein in social media platforms, permitting them to develop into incubators of despise, ethical relativism and conspiracy theories.

The French leader chided tech companies—without naming them—for providing previous President Donald Trump a platform to “spread hate” for yrs just before taking motion. Twitter Inc. banned Mr. Trump’s own account in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, citing the possibility of more incitement of violence. Facebook Inc. announced a non permanent suspension of Mr. Trump just after the riot just before extending that motion indefinitely.

“All those people who authorized President Trump to be successful waited until they were being solely guaranteed that he experienced no electric power remaining to then wrap themselves in dignity and now say ‘Let’s get away his whistle,’” Mr. Macron claimed. “Why did not they shut down his accounts just before all this occurred?”

Mr. Macron claimed governments experienced delegated also much authority to tech companies by expecting them to act as stewards for Western democracy. “This is an concern for actual global regulation,” Mr. Macron claimed.
